Crafty Cfriday: Spring Fever

Friday, February 11, 2011

I think I’m overdue for one of these y’all!  The weather has been all over the place lately… It’s 10 degrees one day and 50 the next.  As soon as I get used to the sunshine, it starts snowing again… And even though you know I l-o-v-e the snow, the spring catalogs bombarding our mail slot have me drooling and daydreaming about the coming season.

So even though I’m not decorating for spring yet, I’m getting busy making plans and getting the goods ready to go!  Here are my two Crafty Cfriday crafts this week: a burlap banner announcing s-p-r-i-n-g and some birds nests.
For the banner, I used burlap, a ruler, a craft pen, stitch-a-witch, twine, stencils, an iron, and craft paint {I went with black because of the contrast but I took some time making up my mind.  Black and burlap don’t exactly scream “spring” but oh well…}
It took an hour or two to complete—the stenciling took the most time simply because I had to work carefully.  To attach the flags to the twine, I just applied the stitch-a-witch to the top border, folded it over the twine, ironed it on {pictured above}, and trimmed the edges.  Handling all of that burlap is a little messy, but I love the end result!
{I know it’s only February—it’s just up for the picture…}  I think this would be a great project for a baby’s room—instead of burlap, use white canvas with colorful letters spelling out the baby’s name?  Cute, cute, cute.

I know birds are all the rage right now… Pottery Barn, World Market, Etsy.  Silhouettes, ceramics.  They’re everywhere.  As it turns out, it’s not just birds but incubating birds that are also the accessory du jour.
Easter Nest with Eggs{Pottery Barn}
So, I set out to make my own.  I already had moss left over from my topiaries, I bought nests from AC Moore (.99 each), and some sculpting clay for $2 from JoAnn’s.
I rolled them into “eggs,” baked them, and painted them {you can buy colored clay, I just didn’t love the shade of blue they were}.  For the speckles, I originally tried to use a gentle spray paint, but it was too hard to control {this may or may not be why I painted them a new blue} and resorted to flicking a paint brush.  A little messy, but it worked.  For the nests, I just smooshed some moss into the already-made nest and voila!  Now I just have to decide where to show them off around the house…
For now, they’re resting in a blue ceramic thingy turned birds nest holder.  Perfect, right? {I grabbed that little white bird from Michael’s last week for $2—love.}
No time for DIY projects?  Sometimes we have more time than money, and sometimes more money than time.  But thanks to my very first giveaway, you don’t need either!  Will it be cute cookware?  Wall art and décor?  Check back soon to find out!
This is making me ready to see some green buds on all of those bare branches outside!  It’s been a busy week for me—tomorrow, I’ll show you the “afters” from my junkin’ trip last weekend and a little birdy {also known as Doug Hill, my favorite weather man} told me it’s going to be 50 degrees and sunny on Sunday.  I spy perfect weather for sanding down a table…

Happy Friday y’all!
